Genevieve Lacey graduated from the
University of Melbourne in 1994 with two degrees: a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Music (majoring in recorder). During her undergraduate years she performed regularly in Melbourne with Early Music ensembles such as Fiato con Brio and the
Elysium Ensemble, and the New Music group
Libra. Several of her performances were broadcast nationally by the ABC. Her first solo CD of contemporary Australian recorder music, entitled
Phoenix Songs, was released by Move Records in 1995.
Genevieve graduated top of her year in the Faculty of Music and was awarded the Welsford Smithers Travelling Scholarship and a Queens Trust Grant to pursue post-graduate studies overseas. She left Australia in 1995 for a year at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (1995 - 1996), and since then has been living in Denmark, studying at the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music with the Swedish recorder player Dan Laurin.
Genevieve returned to Australia briefly at the end of 1997 to perform a programme of solo works in the 1998 Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields Festival and at the Queen's College Chapel, Melbourne University.
During 1999, Genevieve appeared (at very short notice) with the Australian period performance ensemble, the Brandenburg Orchestra in Sydney; the performances were given raptuous reviews.
In 2000, Genevieve toured Australia-wide as a soloist in her own right with the
Brandenburg Orchestra, performing the Vivaldi recorder concerti. In mid-June that year, she once again teamed up with
Poul Høxbro (her duet partner in
two) to tour throughout Scandinavia.
