Sidney Bechet, that imperial figure of early jazz, said it best: "Tell a story in your solo," he'd implore his students. Aimless meandering, simply running the chord changes, these weren't for him. Passion, combined with logic and order, equals art, he'd argue. The musicians that drummer Mark Lockett has assembled for this impressive debut CD About Time are all, whether they know it or not, following Bechet's advice to the letter.
Like the band whose music this group so effortlessly evokes, Art Blakey's 'Jazz Messengers', every member is a master story-teller, steeped in the century-old traditions of jazz but always eager to say something new.
And what members we have here: the multi award-winning Jamie Oehlers (tenor saxophone) together with Jordan Murray (trombone), Paul Van Ross (soprano and tenor saxophones), Alison Wedding (vocals), Mark Fitzgibbon (piano) and Nick Heywood (bass). Last but not least is drummer and leader, the New Zealander Mark Lockett. Definitely someone to watch!

Nick has an extensive performance career with Australian and international jazz musicians. He has played with most leading Australian artists and has numerous TV and movie soundtracks to his credit.
Jordan is one of Melbourne's first-call trombonists. He works in all styles of music from jingles, film scores and early music ensembles to Latin and funk bands, jazz groups and pit orchestras.
Drummer Mark Lockett is a tasteful time-keeper who not only eschews long solos, but clearly espouses the old but very valid notion that a drummer's function in the band is to make everyone sound great, not constantly call attention to his own personal virtuosity.
Jamie's talents, long celebrated by fans on both sides of Australia, are now being recognised on the world stage as well, following his 2003 victory in a Montreux competition for young saxophonists. The win has led to club dates in London and New York in 2004, where his sparkling Dexter Gordon/Wayne Shorter-derived style is certain to result in a raft of new recordings.
Saxophonist Paul Van Ross is an eloquent soloist who is rapidly gaining a glowing reputation in Melbourne with his exceptionally swinging group Scenario.
For the past 6 years, vocalist Alison Wedding has made a living teaching music, and performing part time. She has now released an album with the ABC called The Secret, and is half way through a nation wide tour.
Mark Fitzgibbon is an integral part of Melbourne's ever widening jazz scene. He is a past winner of the Wangarratta piano award and has worked with many of Australia's finest including Dale Barlow, Bernie Mcgann, Vince Jones, Chris Mcnulty and Christine Sullivan.
