The award-winning composer Julian Yu grew up in China, and has been resident in Australia since 1985. In traditional Chinese music a pre-existing piece is ornamented and embellished until it becomes something quite new. In the same way, Julian Yu takes famous pieces from the Western musical tradition and ornaments them in the Chinese manner.
The music, just like the composer himself, are a unique blend of East and West. This CD features the dazzling sticks of the percussionist Robert Clarke, the Academy of Melbourne, the Australia Ensemble and Trio Melbourne.
Press quotes:
“one of the best 'composer portrait' discs of its kind ... The works on this disc are ultra-professional and well made - one sees why the composer wins prizes - but it also repays repeat hearings ... The performances and recordings (many of them live) are good too.”
— Andrew Ford, ABC 24 Hours
“a distinct cultural crossover ... interesting in its conception and quite attractive in its expressive content.”
— Bill Hoffmann, Canberra Times
“A selection of performances of the work of composer Julian Yu makes Classical Allusion a delight ... RATING: 4 out of 5.”
— Chris Copas, The Star
“Yu's symphonic writing is brilliant [and] highly coloured”
— Dale Keeling, Noteworthy

Trio Melbourne is an ensemble comprising three outstanding artists - Roger Heagney (piano), Isin Çakmakçioglu (violin) and Rachel Atkinson (cello). It was established in 1993, and since then has performed to great critical acclaim in Australia and Europe. The trio is committed to performing new works and is keen to expand the piano repertoire.
The Academy of Melbourne is a small chamber orchestra formed in 1989 by its artistic director, Brett Kelly, MSO principal trombone.
It boasts within its ranks many of Australia's finest musicians and offers a highly successful annual concert series in the acoustically pleasing Hawthorn Town Hall.
The Australia Ensemble, resident at the University of New South Wales, was founded in 1980. The group is now widely recognised as this country's chamber music ensemble. Consisting of seven of Australia's leading instrumentalists, the Ensemble is able to engage other outstanding musicians to enable it to present some highly unusal and varied groupings of performers as well as the standard chamber music repertoire.
