Keith Hounslow

For any artist to keep mind and ears open to ideas after 50 years of playing jazz in Australia is remarkable. Keith Hounslow - jazz trumpeter and cornettist extraordinaire - has a style that is melodic and expressive, bristling with eloquent lyricism.

For any artist to keep mind and ears open to ideas after 50 years of playing jazz in Australia is remarkable. Hounslow's style is melodic and expressive, bristling with eloquent lyricism.

This has been the unifying theme that runs through any context he has put himself in, from the Trad Jazz years in post war Australia, to his bebop persona with Brian Brown at the old Jazz Centre 44 in St. Kilda, and his strikingly modernist McJad duets with Tony Gould.

What makes it fascinating is the way he can move so easily in and out of styles, each time he does it is absolutely convincing. And how he swings! From the Joyous stomping bravura of trad to jarring freeform explorations there is some internal clock that weighs each accent to perfection.

"Keith is not only a trumpet player, he is an artist."
(Vince Jones)

"Keith is a great communicator, a wonderful lyrical and natural musician."
(Paul Grabowsky)

"Keith's pocket trumpet playing is some of the most beautiful melodious jazz I've ever heard."
(Graeme Bell)

Performing as McJad

McJad was formed in the 1970s and comprised the duo of trumpeter Keith Hounslow and pianist Tony Gould. The idea was that the duo extemporise not only on an original theme, but a freely improvised theme!

McJad Goes Organic

Those who knew the Melbourne jazz scene back in the 1970s would fondly remember McJad, the free improvising duo of trumpeter Keith Hounslow and pianist Tony Gould. This double-CD features their latest album plus a bonus re-issue of their original LPs. A true collector's item!
