Simone de Haan's trombone can turn from songful to abrasive in a breath, whether in Carl Vine's Love Song or her own collages with percussion. She writes and improvises as readily as she performs.
As co-founder of Flederman she helped define a lean, high-voltage Australian chamber sound built for new scores. On In the Pipeline she stands as trombonist and composer among two percussionists, setting extended pieces such as Autumn Collage, Shifting Energies and Song beside short free improvisations cut in the studio. The session keeps trombone hard against skins and metal: blues fragments, shifting energies, long-form interplay. Elsewhere she joins bass trombone in stylish classical, contemporary and big-band colours, a clean tenor line that holds its place without fuss. The through-line is a player who treats the instrument as both voice and engine.
