Adolf Friedrich Hesse
Adolf Friedrich Hesse (1809–1863) was a German organist and composer, one of the leading organ virtuosi of his generation and a figure in the Bach tradition of Silesia.
Born and based in Breslau, he became principal organist at the Bernhardinerkirche in 1831 and was celebrated for brilliant pedal technique and all-Bach programmes on major European stages. He also conducted symphonic concerts for the city’s opera orchestra. His organ works, rooted in that same tradition, still appear on programmes that survey historic instruments and Romantic repertoire.

This CD marks 150 years of the Bishop Kelly Pipe Organ at St Patrick’s, Mentone. Built by Frederick Nicholson for Prahran’s Independent Church, it is among Australia’s most significant historic instruments. Christopher Trikilis and Dr Gordon Atkinson explore its colours for two and four hands, in music by Vierne, Walther, Hesse, Bonelli and others.
