Bob Hilliard's lyrics gave popular song some of its most intimate night-time confessions and dreamiest storybook turns, from the hushed longing of In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning to the wonder of Alice in Wonderland.
He wrote words that singers lean into: quiet hours, far corners of the world, days that will come. With Sammy Fain he shaped the Alice in Wonderland film songs, including the title theme and I'm Late. With David Mann he caught the lonely after-midnight mood of In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning. Later hits such as Our Day Will Come and Any Day Now carried the same gift for plain speech that still lands. Jazz players keep returning to those melodies because the lines leave room to breathe, improvise and mean it.
