David Mann
David Mann wrote American popular songs that singers and jazz players have kept in circulation for decades, above all In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, with There! I've Said It Again, No Moon at All and Don't Go to Strangers among his other lasting titles.
Working with lyricists including Bob Hilliard and Redd Evans, he shaped standards built for late-night intimacy and clear melodic line. In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning became one of the most covered ballads of its kind, associated with Frank Sinatra and taken up across jazz and cabaret. No Moon at All moves on baroque-leaning harmony; There! I've Said It Again and Don't Go to Strangers found major popular recordings. On these discs his writing appears as repertoire for Australian jazz improvisers, the songs still open enough for live reinvention.
