Jeremy Taylor
Jeremy Taylor is an English folk singer-songwriter whose comic and satirical songs grew out of live performance, mixing sharp observation with guitar-backed storytelling that once spoke directly to life under apartheid.
Much of his work began in clubs and revue, where comedy and song sat side by side. Ag Pleez Deddy, written for the stage show Wait a Minim!, became a surprise hit by catching a child's plea for treats and the pictures in a blend of English and Afrikaans that unsettled official taste while children took it up. Other songs such as Jobsworth, Huberta the hippopotamus, The Pot Song and Mrs Harris keep that wry social bite. Piece of Ground was taken into Miriam Makeba's repertoire. On record he appears as both writer and guitarist, including performances of other songwriters' material.
