Jindřich Feld
Jindřich Feld’s catalogue runs from children’s opera and choral nonsense rhymes to orchestral scores, chamber music and virtuoso flute writing. The music sits near Martinů and the French line from Debussy to Messiaen, with a clear ear for colour and craft.
His 1954 Flute Concerto was written for Jean-Pierre Rampal, who played and recorded it widely; the 1957 Flute Sonata became a fixture of the virtuoso repertoire, and Rampal later commissioned the Fantasy Concertante for flute, string quartet and percussion. Across more than two hundred works he wrote for full orchestra, voice and small ensembles, often with pointed or playful titles, from Mockery about Names to Laus Cantus in memory of Bach. His arrangement of Josef Suk’s Melodie belongs to the short romantic violin-and-piano literature.
