Joaquín Nin
Joaquín Nin's compositions and arrangements draw Spanish folk music into the recital room. His Suite Espagnole offers four short regional portraits of old Castile, Murcia, Asturias and Andalusia, written with a clear melodic line and piano colour.
A Cuban pianist as well as a composer, Nin brought popular Spanish song and dance into concert form. The Suite Espagnole is typical of that bent: four compact movements (Vieille Castille, Murcienne, Asturiana, Andaluza), each stamped by a different region, the cello carrying the tune while the piano answers with rhythmic bite or lyrical warmth.
