John Joubert
John Joubert wrote choral music that sits firmly in the Anglican tradition, above all the carols Torches and There is no rose of such virtue. His wider catalogue also takes in symphonies, concertos, chamber works and operas drawn from literature.
Choirs keep returning to the short sacred pieces: bright processional energy in Torches, and the spare, luminous setting of There is no rose. Behind those seasonal staples stands a large body of work, more than 180 scores in all, spanning oratorios and anthems, song cycles, four string quartets, piano sonatas and seven operas. The language stays clear and tonal, shaped by the English choral idiom rather than by fashion, whether the forces are a chapel choir or full orchestra.
