Kirsty McCahon's double bass anchors chamber scores that range from Elena Kats-Chernin's darkly playful Charleston Noir for four basses to the icy lyricism of Nigel Westlake's Antarctica film music and Andrew Schultz's vocal chamber works.
In Charleston Noir she is one of The Four Basses, driving dance rhythms through high-neck acrobatics and the instrument's deep whoom. The same low voice sits inside Westlake's Antarctic cues, where yearning lyricism meets the force of ice and comic penguin scherzos, and underpins Schultz's chamber songs for Halcyon, music built on word-painting, cross-rhythms and unusual instrumental colour.
