Kurt Weill

Kurt Julian Weill (1900–1950) was a German-born American composer active from the 1920s in his native country, and in his later years in the United States. He was a leading composer for the stage who was best known for his fruitful collaborations with Bertolt Brecht.

Once Kurt Weill found his place in the theatre, his work and reputation flourished. He believed music must speak to the lives of a wide range of people, not just the avant-garde elite. Weill was able to assimilate popular idioms and make them both incisive and grandly epic. He remained capable of appealing to a wide audience without intellectual or technical compromise. In collaboration with Brecht, Weill brought serious music down to earth and elevated popular cabaret into a more refined form.
