Lisa Cheney

Lisa Cheney is an Australian composer whose chamber and vocal works often turn on intimate personal themes, including parenthood and the emotional intensity of contemporary family life.

Her solo Before You, written for bass recorder, is heard on Bass Instincts (MCD 624), a programme of new Australian works for the instrument. It has been described as a pensive tribute and a musical outpouring of love for her newborn daughter, coloured by shades of light and dark.

On Homegrown (MCD 664), her art song Gratitude and Grief receives its world-premiere recording among works by Australian women composers. The song reflects the joys and intensity of contemporary motherhood within a collection concerned with nature, place, and belonging.

Bass Instincts

The bass recorder has grown from consort roots into a virtuosic solo voice: deep, earthy, mellow and haunting. Alicia Crossley, one of Australia’s leading recorder players, presents a programme of new Australian works written for the instrument.
