Marcel Grandjany

Marcel Grandjany's harp music favours colour and bloom: broad glissandi, singing lines and the instrument's full resonance. Automne is marked by the rich, luscious glissandi that sit at the heart of his writing for the solo harp.

A French-born harpist who composed and arranged from inside the instrument, he belongs with the player-composers who enlarged the modern solo repertoire. His pieces sit in the European art-music line that includes Henriette ReniƩ and other harpists writing for their own medium: idiomatic, sonorous and built for the concert platform. Beside original works he arranged widely, feeding the teaching and recital stock performers still reach for.

From classical to folk, from sweeping glissandi to the strikingly contemporary, the range and diversity of the harp always entrances and amazes.
