Robbie James
Robbie James is an Australian guitarist, producer and composer, best known from his work with GANGgajang, whose classical writing has drawn growing recognition. He has been a represented artist of the Australian Music Centre since 2023.
On Dreaming in the Sand (MCD 620), his String Quintet No. 3 in nine movements, he visualises the early stages of colonisation through a dream of a nation founded on inclusivity. The work pays homage to the ancient Map of Songs, moving from the Australian landscape and a day in the life of the kangaroo to Cook’s arrival as a ghost on the beach at Kamay, the First Fleet, and dances of unity across the divide.
His earlier string quintet, The Marree Sisters (ABC Classic, 2022), helped establish him as a significant voice in contemporary Australian composition. On the Move live recording he is also credited as editing engineer.

Robbie James’s String Quintet No. 3, Dreaming in the Sand, is given a raw live performance by the Bentley String Quintet at Brisbane’s New Benner Theatre. Across nine movements it visualises early colonisation through a dream of a nation founded on inclusivity—a dream that still shapes Australia.
