Robert Lucas Pearsall
Robert Lucas Pearsall (1795–1856) was an English composer chiefly of vocal music. His elaborate arrangement of In dulci jubilo and the richly harmonic part-song Lay a garland remain staples of the choral repertoire.
Though he practised briefly as a barrister in Bristol, he developed as a composer after settling on the Continent, writing madrigals and part-songs that kept him linked to English choral life. Many were composed with the Bristol Madrigal Society in mind, and he often signed himself Pearsall of Willsbridge.
On Move his work appears in Carols Psalms and Anthems (MCD 050), which includes his arrangement of In dulci jubilo and the three madrigals Great God of Love, Who shall win my lady fair and Lay a garland, and again with Lay a Garland on Laughing (MD 3306).
