Ronald Barnes

Ronald Barnes (1927–1997) was an American carillonist, composer and musicologist whose original works and arrangements became standard repertoire for the instrument.

He wrote some fifty-six original compositions and hundreds of arrangements, and was a major force in establishing an American approach to carillon writing and performance.

Among pieces heard on Yes, It Rings a Bell! (MD 3224) are the Barcarolle from his Serenades I and his arrangements of Bach and Scarlatti.

He held carillon posts at the University of Kansas, Washington National Cathedral and the University of California, Berkeley, and worked to set standards for repertoire, performance, and instrument design.
