Stephen Leek

Stephen Leek writes choral music built for real voices in real rooms: liturgical settings with unexpected colour, carols, and pieces shaped by long work with youth, community and professional choirs across Australia and abroad.

On record his Sanctus and Agnus Dei sit inside a serene, cathedral glow yet call for novel colour, including Tibetan overtone singing. Peace joins other modern Australian carols in seasonal programmes. Much of the catalogue grew from residencies and practical work with singers rather than the desk alone; he co-founded The Australian Voices to keep new Australian choral writing in regular performance, and his scores travel widely among choirs that need music that is singable, distinctive and useful.

The Australian Chamber Choir, directed by Douglas Lawrence, performs works by eight Australian composers. From Gordon Kerry’s Shakespeare setting to Malcolm Williamson’s English Eccentrics, the programme turns individual voices into pure gold.
