Stuart James
Stuart James is an Australian composer and recording engineer whose work pairs acoustic instruments with electronics and processing. His music often turns on texture, timbre and the shaping of time.
His five-movement Kinabuhi / Kamatayon, for Balinese bossed gongs and electronic processing, draws on gamelan sonorities and on the compression and rarefaction of time. It appears on Music for Percussion and Electronics (TP248), a programme of recent Australian writing for solo percussion with fixed media, processing and sub-bass.
Negative Tendencies is included on In Memoriam (TP272), a collection built around the Stuart & Sons piano and new collaborative writing for the instrument. He has also worked as recording engineer, including on The Dying Sun (MCD 609).
