Sydney Nicholson
Sydney Nicholson's hymn tunes and arrangements serve the Anglican liturgy across the church year, from Advent processions to Easter triumph. His writing for parish choirs is practical, singable and built for congregational worship.
He founded the School of English Church Music, later the Royal School of Church Music, and compiled The Parish Psalter for Anglican chant. His Communion Service in G was long a staple in parish churches, especially where the choir carried the service. Of his hymn tunes, Crucifer for the processional Lift High the Cross is the best known; Totteridge is another still in use. The music is written for real choirs and congregations: clear lines, sturdy harmony, and a practical sense of what holds in worship without drawing attention from the words.
