Vincent Giles

Vincent Giles is an Australian composer whose music explores the extended flute family, from intimate low-flute textures to works for larger flute ensemble.

His Differing Dialogues, for bass flute and pre-recorded low flutes, appears on Monologues & Dialogues (MD 3349), a programme devoted to the resonant depths of the modern low flutes.

On Fantasie Australis (MD 3366) he contributes the title work and Fragments, both written for flute ensemble, and is also credited with photography for the release. The disc gathers new Australian writing that ranges from lyric lines to freer, improvisatory colour.

Fantasie Australis

Compositions by living Australian composers, most based in Melbourne, performed by the Monash University Flute Ensemble under Peter Sheridan. Australia’s flute-ensemble repertoire is still small beside other national traditions, yet the country has a rich store of fine woodwind writing.

Monologues & Dialogues

This recording features the resonant, meditative colours of modern low flutes. Austere, breathy and at times eerie, these deep registers open a sound-world still little explored in woodwind writing, and invite a wide range of musical imaginings.
