William Chatterton Dix

William Chatterton Dix wrote Anglican hymns and carols that remain in wide use, among them As with Gladness Men of Old, Alleluia! Sing to Jesus, and the Christmas carol What Child Is This?.

His original texts appear across modern hymn-books, alongside carols such as The Manger Throne and To You, O Lord, Our Hearts We Raise. He also cast Eastern Christian material into English metre, drawing on translations from the Greek and from Abyssinian sources. The words carry a clear high-church devotion and sit as readily with traditional tunes as with later folk and jazz-inflected settings for congregational singing.
