Alex Shapiro
Alex Shapiro is an American composer of acoustic and electroacoustic concert music, drawing on minimalism, jazz, electronic dance music and cinematic sound worlds. She is widely known for chamber and wind-band works that blend live performance with technology, found sounds and unconventional objects.
Her catalogue runs to more than two hundred scores for large ensembles, choir, chamber groups and soloists, after an earlier career writing for commercial media. She is a noted pioneer of electroacoustic repertoire for concert wind band, often using multimedia and extended techniques.
On Move she is heard as composer of Below (MD 3330), an extended piece for contrabass flute and electronics that explores the deep sonorities of the low flute family.
