Antônio Carlos Jobim fused samba with cool jazz to create bossa nova, writing songs whose sophisticated harmonies and beachside lyricism became permanent fixtures of the jazz and pop standard repertoire.
His melodies often insist on the major seventh and other unexpected twists, giving popular song a cool, floating harmonic life. Wave, Desafinado, Corcovado, How Insensitive and The Girl from Ipanema move easily between Portuguese intimacy and the international jazz bandstand. The sound pairs acoustic Latin rhythm with laid-back improvisation: sun, sea and an unpredictable breeze made into groove. He wrote of love, birds, rain and the natural wonders of Brazil, and pieces such as Waters of March keep turning ordinary images into music that singers and players still want to inhabit.
