Bill Evans wrote jazz that other players keep returning to: Blue in Green with its spare lyric line, the open ground of Nardis, and the gentle Children's Play Song. The pieces sit among standards because they already behave like them.
His name on a tracklist usually means a tune built for listening and for taking further. Blue in Green, shared with Miles Davis, and Nardis appear here in a light, propulsive setting of nylon-string guitar, saxophones and tabla, holding their own beside new originals. Children's Play Song finds a home among old and new standards and music caught at the keyboard in the moment. The writing leaves space: melody first, harmony that invites the next player in.
