Recorded in February 2010 at Move Records studio in Melbourne, the album is dedicated to Gould’s wife Imogen and their young daughter Iluka.

Across standards, film themes and his own miniatures, the programme reflects a long practice of creative music-making that moves freely between jazz and classical traditions.

In the artist’s words

This collection of pieces includes old and new standards, originals, music written for film, and three pieces composed totally spontaneously at the keyboard. It represents playing and musical ideas at a particular time in life. Up until now there has been a lot of jazz and classical playing/composing. But in the spirit of creative music-making things should always be changing, in the on-going challenge to avoid if possible becoming what Cecil Beaton called a ‘slave of the ordinary’ or a ‘creature of the common place’. This recording is dedicated to my wife Imogen and my four-year-old daughter Iluka. Heartfelt thanks once again to Martin Wright at Move for his great expertise and endless support of Australian music and musicians.

Tony Gould

Pianist and composer Tony Gould is one of Australia’s most respected musicians. His career has spanned jazz and other improvisatory forms as well as traditional and contemporary classical, and for decades he has stood at the forefront of music education in Australia.

Vincent Youmans

Vincent Youmans wrote lean Broadway songs built from short repeated phrases and subtle harmonic turns. Tea for Two, I Want to Be Happy and More Than You Know became lasting standards, still favoured by jazz players.

Bill Dobbins

Bill Dobbins is a jazz pianist, composer and educator whose work includes solo piano writing and materials used in jazz pedagogy.

Bill Evans

Bill Evans wrote jazz that other players keep returning to: Blue in Green with its spare lyric line, the open ground of Nardis, and the gentle Children's Play Song. The pieces sit among standards because they already behave like them.

Albert Hague

Albert Hague (1920–2001) was a German-born American songwriter and actor. His Broadway musicals include Plain and Fancy, source of the enduring standard Young and Foolish.
