The Other Side of Tony Gould opens a window onto the classical imagination of one of Australia’s most respected jazz musicians. Long known as a pianist and improviser who moves freely between genres, Gould here presents original compositions and interpretations shaped by a lifelong love of the great masters.

All works except Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring are Gould’s own, written over the past two decades. Much of the album was recorded on a Yamaha C7 at Move Records; Dreams of My Girl and Homage to Mahler come from live performance.

The result is an intimate portrait of a composer whose music grows from deep listening, heartfelt expression, and respect for tradition—a reminder that an artist’s “other side” often lights the whole of their creative spirit.

A Little Music for Jasmine was written for Jasmine Lai and I suspect her name will become well known as she grows to artistic maturity, one of the most talented young pianist/composers I have ever come across.

I have been recording for decades at Move Records and I want to express my heartfelt thanks to my dear friend and founder of the company, Martin Wright. Whether it was jazz/improvised music or classical music he always said ‘yes’ to my projects. Music in Australia, and Australian music would be much the poorer without him; a view held by many of Australia’s finest musicians.

Pianist and composer Tony Gould is one of Australia’s most respected musicians. His career has spanned jazz and other improvisatory forms as well as traditional and contemporary classical, and for decades he has stood at the forefront of music education in Australia.

Firebird Trio

Like its mythical namesake which shone magically through the darkness, Firebird Trio sheds light on music from all epochs. Founded in 2010, they have performed nationwide to critical acclaim, with a vibrancy of imagination that echoes its name.

Jasmine Lai

Jasmine is studying at Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and was first prize winner of the ArsClassica International Junior competition (2024) and will perform in collaboration with the Polish Institute of Culture in Rome, Italy in December 2025.

Rosa Scaffidi

Rosa Scaffidi began her life-long love affair with the piano and its mighty repertoire at the age of 2. She is an extremely versatile musician, and is highly skilled in the interpretation of many musical styles as well as being a proficient improviser.

Igor Stravinsky

Igor Stravinsky's music cracks open rhythm and colour: pagan rite and puppet theatre, Russian folk bite and cool neoclassical poise. From The Rite of Spring to Petrouchka and The Firebird, the writing still startles the ear.
