The idea for the album grew from each musician’s love of traditional music, especially that of Scotland and Ireland. It finds its feet across Ireland, Scotland, England and Sweden, with the trio bringing specialised backgrounds, creativity and interpretive skill to these songs and making a sound that is truly their own.

Fifteen tracks of pure pleasure follow. Like the finest meal, these three musical masterchefs blend their talents into timeless material, with rich flavour and tone throughout.

Tony, Louise and I come together as musicians and friends who share a love of traditional music, particularly that of Scotland and Ireland. With our differing musical backgrounds and offerings in addition to that of the folk tradition, it is a pleasure and delight to experience the different musical flavours that emerge as we join together in creating our own interpretations of these timeless songs and tunes.

It was a real pleasure for me to be on this lovely recording with two of my favorite musicians. I would like my solo contributions to be heard as interludes between Claire’s glorious singing and playing of the harp, and the gentle warmth of Louise’s cello. The pieces are some of my favorites from Scotland, Ireland and England, all associated with the rich and bottomless folk traditions of these lands.

Tony, Claire and I embraced the chance to capture a few moments of shared music making between friends. Pianist and composer Tony Gould is one of Australia’s most respected musicians. His career has spanned jazz and other improvisatory forms as well as traditional and contemporary classical, and for decades he has stood at the forefront of music education in Australia.

Thomas Moore set verses of Irish dispossession, loss and resistance to old Irish tunes in his Irish Melodies. Songs such as The Minstrel Boy and The Last Rose of Summer remain among the most enduring of those airs.
