Bob Bertles

Bob Bertles plays soprano, alto and baritone saxophone on John Sangster's jazz epic The Lord of the Rings, helping colour Tolkien's scenes and characters with trad and modern jazz across a large Australian studio cast.

An Australian jazz saxophonist and bandleader, he moved between clubs, sessions and the pop-rock circuit, spent a stretch with Ian Carr's Nucleus, and later worked festivals, theatre pits and ensembles such as Ten Part Invention. On Sangster's Tolkien cycle the writing grows denser and more film-like as it progresses, with warm ballads set beside sharper character pieces; Bertles's reeds sit inside that shifting palette rather than out front as a star turn.
