An American pianist-composer whose cool-jazz writing fused song forms with demanding rhythmic structures and classical colour. The classic quartet made Time Out a standard-bearer for nonstandard time, with Desmond’s Take Five and Brubeck’s own Blue Rondo à la Turk among the pieces that stuck. That rondo turns up here on harpsichord in a programme that treats Baroque and jazz as open borders; elsewhere horn and piano take up Strange Meadow Lark, Bluette and Lamento, letting the melodies sit in a chamber light without losing their swing. The writing stays clear, tuneful and rhythmically restless whether the setting is club, concert hall or studio crossover.
