Eddie DeLange wrote the lyrics that give shape to lasting American standards. His words ride under Ellington's Solitude and Van Heusen's Darn That Dream, songs still sought for their mix of longing and swing-era ease.
Working first with Will Hudson and later with Jimmy Van Heusen, he supplied words for hits that bandleaders and singers took up at once. Moonglow and A String of Pearls belong to that run. He led his own bands as well, taking the songs on the road while the records carried them further. The catalogue still turns up whenever a vocalist wants a standard that already knows how to sit in a small group or a big-band chart.
