Emily Hall
Emily Hall is a British composer of classical music, electronica and songs. Her song cycle Life Cycle traces the emotional journey of impending motherhood.
Commissioned by Opera North and premiered in 2011, Life Cycle (MD 3433) is one of three collaborations with the poet Toby Litt. The others are Befalling, on unrequited love, and Rest, on death.
Her music grows from close work with singers and writers, and from her own uses of technology in live performance. Operas include Sante (2006), drawing on African melody and rhythm, and the one-act Found and Lost (2016). Folie à Deux (2015) was made as both a concept album and an opera, for a newly built electro-magnetic harp.
She received the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Award in 2005, the Genesis Opera Prize in 2006 and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Artists in 2013.
