Ernesto Lecuona

Ernesto Lecuona’s piano writing bends European salon forms toward Cuban rhythm and colour: dances, character pieces and Spanish-inflected showpieces that lodge in the ear and refuse to leave.

La Comparsa steps out as an African-Cuban folk dance. A la Antigua and Ante El Escorial sit beside the better-known Malagueña and Andalucía: music that began at the keyboard and still carries the heat of Spanish and Cuban dance into concert programmes, jazz sets and even a septet of harps. The pull is not how closely these pieces resemble European models, but how they twist those models into a Latin American idiom of their own.
