Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck
Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562–1621) was a Dutch composer, organist and teacher whose keyboard and sacred vocal music stand at the turn from Renaissance to Baroque. His organ works and psalm settings remain central to the early keyboard and choral repertory.
Long organist of Amsterdam’s Oude Kerk, he wrote variation sets, fantasias and sacred polyphony that shaped generations of northern players. On Move his Christmas motet Hodie Christus natus est appears on A Baroque Christmas (MCD 607), while organ programmes take up the variations on Puer nobis nascitur, Mein junges Leben hat ein End and the Fantasia Chromatica.
