Jan Sedivka
Jan Sedivka gave Australian violin music a distinctive voice through premieres and dedicated concertos, above all Larry Sitsky’s cycle. His playing joins intensity with a wide, questing colour that suits large-scale modern scores.
Czech-born and later based in Hobart, he became a catalyst for new Australian writing for the violin. Sitsky dedicated four concertos to him. The First, Mysterium Cosmographicum, unfolds as a large span with female voices and material drawn from Busoni. The Third, I Ching: The Eight Kua, moves through eight short movements coloured by Chinese string portamento and percussion. On record he favours clarity and long line over display, meeting ambitious scores on their own terms and drawing committed partners around him.
