Jennifer Filby
Jennifer Filby (1938–1997) was a Tasmanian choral director and piano teacher who founded the Australian Rosny Children’s Choir in 1967 and led it for three decades.
She shaped the choir into a disciplined national ensemble that commissioned Australian works, sang with major orchestras, and toured widely, including the first Australian musical performances on mainland China.
Move recorded that work with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. The Sound of Rosny (MD 3015) marked the choir’s tenth anniversary and its 1975 China tour, spanning songs of other lands, Australian bush ballads, and movements from Vaughan Williams’s Folk Songs of the Four Seasons and Don Kay’s Songs of Come and Gone. The World is a Beautiful Place (MD 3040) presents settings of C. J. Dennis alongside the choir’s own theme song. On There is an Island (MD 3116) she directed Kay’s cantata of early Tasmanian history with George Dreyfus’s companion piece The Song of the Maypole.
