Jerome Kern
Jerome Kern's songs sit at the heart of the American musical and the jazz standard book: long-lined melodies that carry character and story as easily as they invite improvisation, from Show Boat ballads to Hollywood fox-trots.
He wrote more than seven hundred songs for stage and screen, often with Oscar Hammerstein II, Dorothy Fields or Johnny Mercer. Ol' Man River, Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, The Way You Look Tonight, All the Things You Are and I'm Old Fashioned keep returning because the tunes are cut for both drama and dance: flowing arcs, sly harmonic turns, and a conversational ease jazz players have claimed as their own. Kern fitted melody to situation and lyric rather than hanging numbers on a thin plot. That is why the same songs still work sung straight, stretched over a rhythm section, or even handed to a solo tuba.
