Jim Minchin

Australian composer and Anglican priest James Blundell “Jim” Minchin (b. 1942) helped renew church music in the 1960s through jazz-inflected hymn settings, later writing songs to texts by contemporary poets and reaching audiences in Australia and abroad.

Educated at Camberwell Grammar School, where he studied piano and organ, he later attended Trinity College, University of Melbourne, completing a BA in Classics and a ThL between 1960 and 1966. During these years he also became closely involved with the Student Christian Movement. He was ordained in the Anglican diocese of Melbourne in 1967, and served at St George’s, Malvern, St Andrew’s Cathedral, Singapore, Trinity College, Melbourne, and Corpus Christi College, Oxford.

Minchin’s early composing grew from practical need. In 1962, while preparing music for a weekly mission service in Trinity College Chapel, he found little contemporary material available and began setting older hymn texts to new, jazz-inflected tunes, experimenting with accompaniment beyond the traditional organ. These works, later associated with “jazz in the church”, reflected both the musical openness of the 1960s and wider movements within Christian churches towards liturgical renewal, greater cultural engagement, and more contemporary language in worship. His music was praised by church leaders including Archbishop Frank Woods, who commended its role in making faith more vivid and accessible to worshippers of different generations.

His composing later expanded beyond revised hymnody to include settings of texts by modern writers, among them Sydney Carter, as well as songs engaging broader personal, social and justice themes. What began as local experimentation drew interest from across Australia and overseas. Time spent in Singapore and Malaysia broadened his artistic and theological outlook, exposing him to diverse musical and literary traditions and contributing to his later role as text editor of Sound the Bamboo (2000), a major collection of Asian hymnody. Though much of his later composing remained outside the public eye, he returned to performance and recording in later life, bringing his music again to new audiences.
