John Barrett
John Barrett brings a warm, improvising saxophone voice to Melbourne sessions and the World Rhythm Band, writing pieces that swing from tropical funk to carillon colour with the same easy fluency across reeds, didjeridu and keys.
On WindSong he steps out on soprano saxophone, didjeridu and synthesisers, his improvising cutting through big-band standards and new Australian scores alike. Tropical Funk is his own: funk energy set hard against the trombone's weight. He also writes for carillon; Suite on Moreton Bay rings out among the bells of the National Carillon. On film scores he adds Indian flute, bass clarinet, tenor sax and flute, the multi-reed colour that lets a soundtrack change mood without fuss. In the World Rhythm Band his sax sits warm against rock-steady bass, tasteful drums and delicate percussion.
