Joseph Gelineau
Joseph Gelineau shaped modern Christian liturgical song through his psalmody: chant-inflected tones that follow the uneven line lengths of the psalms rather than forcing them into regular hymn metres.
Drawn from Gregorian chant, the tones keep the asymmetrical three- and four-line shape of the psalm texts while remaining singable for congregation and choir. He helped rework the Jerusalem Bible Psalter and later wrote numerous chants for the ecumenical Taizé Community.
