Laura Chislett Jones
Laura Chislett Jones brings flute and bass flute to contemporary Australian chamber music, from intimate commemorative trios to the gleaming woodwind colours of Halcyon’s Kingfisher commissions.
On Kingfisher she is the flutes in a tight chamber band around two voices, helping twenty-one short new works land as lucid, rhapsodic and reflective rather than merely busy. The same ear for colour serves Remembering Gallipoli, where her bass flute joins violin and piano in music of warmth and directness, and earlier portrait discs of Julian Yu’s East–West ornamented scores. The playing is clean, flexible and at the service of the line: multi-instrument woodwind that blends without vanishing, and that makes new Australian chamber writing sound worth hearing again.
