Leo Brouwer
Leo Brouwer’s guitar music moves between Cuban pulse, modernist experiment and later modal clarity. The Etudes Simples, Hika in memory of Takemitsu, Micro Pieza and Berceuse show how sharply he can shape atmosphere and motif.
In Hika he builds a Takemitsu-like stillness, then cuts it with motifs that recur across his guitar writing. Early scores stay close to Cuban rhythm; pieces from the 1960s and 70s open into indeterminacy; later solo works such as El Decamerón Negro and the Sonata written for Julian Bream favour tonality and modality. Beyond the guitar he has written for orchestra and ballet, scored more than a hundred films, and made classical-guitar versions of popular song.

A Classic Case of Love
