Leonard Dommett
Leonard Dommett (1928–2006) was an Australian violinist, conductor and teacher. Long concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, he was a leading soloist for whom many Australian composers wrote concertos.
After early work with ballet companies and London orchestras he returned to Australia, leading the South Australian Symphony Orchestra before his long Melbourne tenure as concertmaster and assistant conductor. He later taught for two decades at the Canberra School of Music and conducted widely as a guest.
Chamber and solo recordings preserve his full, lyrical tone. On Mozart at Melbourne (MCD 046) he is heard in Mozart violin sonatas from celebrated 1967 Melbourne recitals. He is the soloist in the Violin Concerto on Bruce Cale: Orchestral Works (TP188).
He was concert-master of the 1973 Melbourne String Quartet, formed from principals of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
