Louis Vierne
Louis Vierne’s organ music balances elegant form with romantically rich harmony: six symphonies, fantasy pieces crowned by the Carillon de Westminster, and liturgical scores written for the great French instruments.
As organist of Notre-Dame de Paris he wrote music thoroughly idiomatic to the instrument, clean in line yet luxuriant in colour. The organ symphonies and the free-style pieces give players a full romantic range without theatrical excess. Chamber works, choral scores and the Messe solennelle for choir and two organs sit beside the solo repertoire, shaped for sacred space and the French grand-organ tradition. The Carillon de Westminster peals with unmistakable swagger wherever bells and pipes meet.
