Matthew Camidge
Matthew Camidge (1764–1844) was an English organist and composer, long based at York Minster, whose keyboard music includes organ concertos and a once-familiar gavotte.
After early training as a Chapel Royal chorister he returned to York, assisted his father at the Minster, and succeeded him as organist in 1799, remaining until his retirement in 1842. He was known for brilliant organ improvisation, for leading local musical life, and for organising large festivals in the Minster.
His writing is solid and conservative in craft. Besides six concertos for organ or piano and hymn tunes that entered the Anglican repertoire, a short Gavotte drawn from one of the concertos has kept a place in the English organ repertory. It appears on two Move surveys of Melbourne instruments: Pachelbel, His Canon and Much More (MD 3013) and North of the Yarra: Organs of Melbourne (MD 3333).
