Philip Czaplowski
Philip Czaplowski composes contemporary classical music that folds found material into chamber writing. The Blackbird's Song of Peace for solo flute is built on a seven-note scale taken from a blackbird call heard in Tasmania.
He has also worked in team-based composition. Conversations, a Monash University research project, brought six composers together with performers and music technology to make a single electro-acoustic work praised as rich and engaging. His Blackbird's Song of Peace sits among Australian chamber pieces recorded by the Italian group Trio Altrove 1.3. The opening bars came from pianist Geoffrey Tozer, who supplied a blackbird call he had heard in 1964; the title also marks the day composition began, the first day of the US invasion of Iraq.
