Pierre Bouteiller

Pierre Bouteiller’s surviving sacred works comprise thirteen petits motets and a requiem for five voices and basso continuo. His motets for voice with two viola da gambas place the singer among the rich, intimate sonorities of the French viol tradition.

These settings belong to the late seventeenth-century French petit motet, written for modest forces rather than full chapel splendour. The rarely heard pieces for soprano, two bass viols and continuo give the vocal line a dark, sustained underpinning, the gambas sharing the texture rather than merely accompanying it.
