Richard Miller’s percussion colours Nigel Westlake’s Antarctica film score, from ice-force tuttis to the comic slap of Penguin Circus, and rings the four cymbals that map galaxies in Georges Lentz’s Caeli enarrant… IV.
On Westlake he helps the orchestra give the music a life away from the IMAX screen: yearning lyricism, wooden ships, tender threnody and the sudden fun of the penguin cues. With Synergy he joins the percussion quartet for Edwards, Westlake’s Malachite Glass with bass clarinet, Sculthorpe, Cage’s First Construction and Dave Samuels’s vibraphone-led pieces, music that cooks rather than decorates. In Lentz the cymbals sit inside the string quartet’s star maps, marking Pleiades, nebulae and Andromeda with an awesome sense of space.
